The Unfolding Soul: The Power of the Hrit Chakra

Many traditions speak of the seat of the soul as being found within the heart center. While the Heart Chakra (Anahata) is well known, a potentially “deeper” spiritual seat of the soul is often overlooked. In yoga, the Hrit Chakra—also known as the Hridaya or Surya Chakra—is considered by many to be the seat of the soul.

🌱 My Connection with the Hrit Chakra

I never explored the Hrit Chakra, except in the Samyama practice at ISHTA yoga. So during covid, when I woke up chanting the Hrit Chakra mantra from the Samyama practice, to say I was grateful would be an understatement.

The only aspect that I know about this mantra was mantra invokes intuitive clarity and spiritual seeing. From my dream course, I know that to awake with a sacred chant, regardless of what it means is a transcendent experience in and of itself.

Like the petals of the Hrit Chakra, something was beginning to unfold.

Fast forward to 2025 and my entire life has changed. I released my home and any material possession I didn’t need, closed my practice and surrendered into the flow of life.

Now nomadic, I’m opening to something I can only begin to understand. It has given me a spectrum of experiences I couldn’t have imagined that fateful morning the mantra awoke in me.

So when a I received a visual journey of eight petals opening to reveal a blossoming flower I knew it was a magical thread that I needed to pull on. It led me to search for a chakra with 8 petals.

When I saw it was the Hrit Chakra, my heart sang. I joyfully leaped to the next stepping stone of curiosity!

Now that you know the backstory, let’s explore the unfolding connection between the Hrit Chakra and reclaiming the Self,

🌼 What Is the Hrit Chakra?

The Hrit Chakra is sometimes called a “minor” chakra. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s less significant. The “main” chakras are points where many nadi’s intersect. A minor chakra has less nadis or currents of energy intersecting. While they are all working with subtle energy, less converging nadis means its more subtle in its nature.

Please also know that its an integrated system of subtle energy. Parsing them out in this way is simply to help the mind comprehend something that can’t necessarily be explained in words.

Through yogic teachings, inner guidance, and a deep dive with AI, I’ve come to feel that the Hrit Chakra could be considered the seat of the soul or point of connection with the Jiva-atman that is everpresent. Jive-atman is said to be the individual essence of Source expressed as you in form. As Rumi says, “You are not a drop in the ocean, you are the entire ocean in a drop.”

Boat on the sand at low tide with the water behind it with the Rumi quote - You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean, in a dop.
Shout out to my brother for this incredible photo.

If you’re thinking, Jiva- what!?! Let me provide a little clarification:

  • Parātman (Paramatman) is the universal Self – the unchanging, all-encompassing Source beyond form.
  • Ātman is the true Self within you – the drop of the infinite ocean.
  • Jīva-ātman is that same Self experienced through embodiment – your soul in form, moving through life while still carrying the essence of the whole. This is where the Divine knows itself within form, expressed as you—the seat of the soul.

🪷 The 8 Petals of the Hrit Chakra

The Hrit Chakra is often described as having eight petals, each one symbolizing a different aspect of divine remembrance. As I mentioned, these petals came to me in a vision and feel instrumental in the presence program, so I’ll be exploring them further in future posts. For now, let this introduction invite you to feel into the unfolding of that energy.

🧘‍♀️ Working with the Hrit Chakra

It is traditionally located below the physical heart and slightly to the left—also said to be where the Jiva-atman “resides”.

But don’t get stuck on the location. You don’t need to “get it right.” This work is all about moving beyond that mindset! Furthermore, designating a space where something resides is within the context of a reality where there is space and time. The unique essence of you and the essence of all that we’re speaking of is beyond space and time.

Fun fact, I wrote this piece months ago and my embodied understanding of this shifted in the time that I am now sharing it. I used to hold true to it being in a specific location. That was what my mind needed to slowly allow for the truth of it to become an embodied knowing. That each unique essence (you) of the all (“Source”) is every cell of your entire being. Your essence in form. I’ll speak more to this in future posts!

And now, lets dive back to the realm and space and time and working with the Hrit chakra specifically…🤣

Thus, you can simply hold the intention of connecting with the Hrit’s essence, without assigning it a fixed location—allowing it to be everywhere within and all around you.

Try one of these approaches:

  • Visualize: a point of light or an eight-petaled lotus or any symbol that resonates in your heart center.
  • Hold an intention without placing the Hrit anywhere—and thus, allow it to be everywhere.
  • Place your hands on your heart and breathe into the remembrance of your True Essence.
  • Let the Hrit Chakra guide you intuitively based on your needs.

🔄 The Hrit as a Union Point

I see the Hrit Chakra as a union point—a bridge between form and Spirit. It’s where your unique frequency, vibration, energy, and essence all express as you, without separation.

You’re not becoming someone else. You’re remembering who you truly are. You’re reclaiming the Self.

This unfolding doesn’t usually happen all at once. It can feel spontaneous or subtle, sometimes unnoticed until you reflect.

Presence is key to recognizing the movement. You may notice it in moments of alignment. Moments of flow. Those moments where you feel alive – where you feel like You.

Remember friends,

You are already experiencing moments of alignment.
And the more you recognize them, the more you return to them with ease.

It’s a similar idea to muscle memory. It doesn’t necessarily happen overnight…though it can. What you believe makes it so.😉

✨ A Living Teaching

This is where we begin to remember what has never truly been forgotten:

We are not separate from Source.
Therefore, nothing is separate from Source.
The light we seek is the light we are.
In the stillness of presence and being – Illuminous Reminiscity shines.

Until next time, stay curious and open to the petals of your own remembrance.
