Throat Chakra Explained
Our throat chakra goes by a number of names, as do all of the chakras. In addition to the throat chakra, people refer to it as the 5th chakra, the blue chakra and the space chakra.
The Sanskrit name is Vishuddha. This translates to “purification” or “to purify”. To be honest, it took me awhile to fully understand the signifigance of this.
Personally, I see it as a vehicle to purify what does not serve our highest Self. As you work with the chakras along with inner growth and development, you can begin to shed what no longer serves you. I like to refer to it as our “humanness”. Our throat chakra, along with the entire chakra system is instrumental in this process!
Governing Forces
Our throat chakra governs communication, self-expression and creativity. When balanced, it can purify the thoughts, concepts, ideas, and expression so that it represents your most authentic self. It helps to filter what’s coming from our humanness, our ego, our insecurities, etc.
Some do believe creativity is governed by the second chakra and while this confused me at first, I now find the beauty and freedom in this knowledge. Let’s learn why!
I started learning about the chakras when my mind was more rigid and still very much stuck in black and white or binary thinking. Information was right or it was wrong. So I had a hard time grappling with not knowing what was the “right” chakra to associate creativity with.
The more I worked with the chakras, the more my mind eased up and started to exist and dare I say thrive in the gray rainbow space between binary options. What also helped was embodying the understanding that, while one chakra may govern an aspect of self, it still involves all of the other chakras in doing so!
For example, my creativity lives in my mind first before it can materialize as anything tangible. Thus, my sixth and seventh chakra are very much involved as they formulate the ideas (7th) and visualize it (6th). As I live in my head, I also need grounding for anything to actually move from my head to the material world. Thus, my root chakra is very much part of the equation. My third chakra gives me the energy and confidence to create, my second chakra allows me to edit and make changes. And my heart chakra is the driving force for my content as it’s always coming from a place of service.
So, while the throat chakra (or second chakra if that resonates for you) governs our creativity, the entire chakra system is necessary. With this in mind, let’s explore some throat chakra crystals to support your healing journey!

Below are 5 crystals that you can begin to explore as tools in your chakra healing tool box. Please know that the list and explanations of the crystals are not exhaustive. If you don’t feel called to any of these, there is a whole world out there of crystals and other tools to explore.
Lapis Lazuli

Blue Lace Agate
Blue Lace Agate is a soothing and calming stone. It helps with effective communication and self-expression by promoting clarity and confidence in your speech. It can also assist in resolving conflicts and promoting understanding in relationships.
Sodalite
Sodalite is a stone of truth and logic. It encourages rational thinking and clear communication. Sodalite can help you speak your mind with confidence and integrity, making it an excellent choice for balancing the throat chakra.
Aquamarine
Aquamarine is associated with the water element, and its calming energy helps you express yourself with compassion and empathy. It can also enhance intuition and psychic abilities, making it a valuable stone for those who use their voice for healing or spiritual work.
Blue Kyanite
Blue Kyanite is known for its ability to open and align all chakras, but it is particularly useful for the throat chakra. It promotes honest and clear communication while also helping you connect with your inner truth and authenticity.
How to work with throat chakra crystals
A gentle reminder that:
Where your awareness goes, energy flows.
Thus, just by simply holding a crystal or stone with your awareness at your throat, you can direct the healing properties of the crystals to your throat chakra. It is said that the left hand receives, so many often hold it with their left hand when using it in this way. You can also do this after or while rubbing the crystal into the palm of your hands (hold for approximately 30 seconds). .
If you are a writer or artist that utilizes your dominant hand when creating, you can hold the crystal in your non-dominant hand while you create. Setting an intention prior to beginning is always recommended! An example might be, may my creativity flow or my creativity flows with ease.
Many people like to place the crystal or stone directly on the throat. Unless it is on a necklace, this of course is much easier to do when lying down. As always. you can set the intention to allow the healing properties of the crystal to balance your throat chakra.
