“God said, ‘Let there be light.'”
It’s a phrase many know, but lately it has been echoing in a new frequency within me. If God said let there be light, then God is not light. At least, not only light. God is something deeper, prior, pulsing through the silence before the light.
Before we go any further, please know that you can use any name or label you feel comfortable with in lieu of God. Also know that there is no need to place any name or label upon it – for it simply is.
Light, then, becomes a mirror. A way to perceive. A way to reflect what is unseen within and all around.
Spiritual awakening is often seen as the journey into light. However, this is not the end. Light draws us forward, but ultimately it dissolves into the formless void from which it emerged.
The deeper invitation, I feel, is not to stay in the brightness, but to use it as a guide to return to what can’t be seen — the still, eternal field of Presence within.
And yet, many of us find the light through the darkness.
We descend. We forget. We lose ourselves. And in that losing, something awakens. A longing. A spark. We seek the light not because it is the destination, but because it reminds us of what we are — beyond the seen and known.
This feels like a cycle. A spiral, not a line. A sacred pattern of descent and return. One that mirrors both the microcosm of the individual soul and the macrocosm of humanity.
It reminds me of the Yugas.
The Yugas as Spiral: A Cosmic Mirror
In Vedic cosmology, the Yugas are great ages of time that reflect collective consciousness. But they are not merely linear ages — they are frequencies. Waves. Spirals of expansion and contraction, remembrance and forgetting.
Kali Yuga — the age of density, confusion, and materialism. It is the personal night, the descent into shadow. The forgetting.
Dvapara Yuga — the stirring. The light begins to pierce the dark. Knowledge returns. Truth feels possible again, but often remains externalized. We begin to sense something more.
Treta Yuga — the integration. The inner light awakens. We remember we are not just seekers of truth but expressions of it. The light becomes part of us.
Satya Yuga — the return. Oneness. The light and dark merge, not as opposites but as complements. The void is no longer feared. It is welcomed. We dissolve into Presence. Not as escape, but as embodiment.

Micro and Macro: Living the Yugas Within
We often think of the Yugas as grand, sweeping cycles of thousands of years. They also live in us — guiding our spiritual growth through Yuga cycles that echo within. Daily. Monthly. Over a lifetime.
We cycle through our own mini-Yugas:
- Times of forgetting and struggle (Kali)
- Times of seeking and glimpsing (Dvapara)
- Times of practice and deepening (Treta)
- Moments of stillness, clarity, and Presence (Satya)
And just like the cosmic Yugas, these cycles are not punishments or prizes. They are pathways. No matter where we find ourselves, there is always a thread leading home.
Because the light is not separate from the void. It is the whisper that helps us remember the silence beneath it.
And the darkness? It too is sacred. It teaches us to feel. To long. To seek. And to Remember.
Every phase holds the seed of the return. Each holding a unique frequency to experience and embody it.
So whether you’re experiencing the dark, the light, or somewhere in between — you are always on the path. The spiral moves through you. You don’t have to get anywhere.
You just have to remember who and what you already are.
Reflection Invitation
I invite you to reflect upon how these relate to how you feel now and throughout your personal journey. As you reflect on your journey, loved ones, those you don’t know, society, you can begin to see these cycles or frequencies play out in all their wisdom.
- What phase of the spiral do you sense yourself in right now?
- How do light, darkness, and the void show up in your current experience?
- In what ways have forgetting or struggle offered hidden gifts?
- What thread of remembrance is quietly guiding you home?
