Understanding the Concept of Infinity Through Presence

Have you ever tried to think about the concept of infinity or eternity? I don’t know about you, but trying to conceptualize no beginning or end in reference to time hurts my brain. So today I want to share a way I started thinking about it that makes it a little easier to approach. Also knowing, thinking about it isn’t the most productive path.

I’m also going to share an exercise you can use to conceptualize infinity in the material world. Specifically as to how we are limitless beings, only limited by our beliefs.

Concept of Infinity

The concept of infinity is quite the paradox. Infinity represents something beyond measurement, yet we try to understand it through the lens of time.

This is how I began to think about it differently.

I started to consider infinity, eternity, forever… as the present moment.

When you think about “the eternal Now,” at least for me, it felt more digestible.

The way I like to think about it is that every second is both a beginning and an end. They happen almost simultaneously when you are not watching the seconds tick away.

Through a particular lens, there is no true beginning or end when you are fully in the moment.

Thus, when we are present, we are able to tap into the eternal now while still experiencing life within the space-time continuum.

Two Sides of the Same Coin

Let’s use some imagery and pop culture to look at it.

Imagine a beginning and end or even death and rebirth, as two sides of the same coin.

When you are present, the coin is spinning. As it spins, you know both sides exist, but you cannot clearly distinguish one from the other.

It’s kind of like the idea of the top spinning in the movie Inception. When it is spinning, he was in a dream and when it stopped he was awake in “reality”.

When we are connected to that which is eternal (our True nature) when: dreaming, upon death, Samadhi, awakening, presence, etc….the coin is spinning.

When we are in time and duality (beginning and ending), the coin is no longer spinning, revealing one if not both sides.

It’s when we can begin to straddle these two concepts that we can then see ourselves through a similar lens.

We are Limitless

If we take this idea of infinity and translate it into limitless potential, things become interesting.

An ongoing message that comes through while channeling refers to the high Self as the limitless self and the small self as the limited self.

If these are all new terms. The high self or limitless self is who and what you truly are. You can think of it as the Soul. The small or limited self is the perceived self. How we identify through our ego.

Also recognizing that the ego is purposeful. It’s how you know how to introduce yourself and navigate the world.

The challenge arises when we over-identify with the ego and forget the possibility that our nature may be far more expansive than we perceive.

Forest Exercise

If you sit with it, the idea of being limitless can stretch the mind just as much as contemplating infinity.

To help ground this idea, we can tap into the perspective through nature.

If you live near a forest, I encourage you to go there in person and try this exercise.

A lush forest with trees and ferns with the sun peaking through

If not, imagine a forest or look at the photo above.

Try to estimate how many trees there are.

Then imagine how many trees exist across the entire planet.

Now consider how many leaves and pine needles exist among all of those trees.

Feel free to stop there if your brain is starting to feel overwhelmed.

 If you want to continue…

Imagine how many leaves exist across every flower, shrub, and bush. Add in every blade of grass and every clover.

As you sit with it, the number begins to feel almost incomprehensible.

If even one aspect of nature can feel infinite, and we are part of nature, might we also be infinite?

I am not suggesting this as fact. I’m simply offering a perspective. Another lens through which one might view themselves.

Much like seeing the glass as half empty or half full.

Until next time, stay curious!
