Divine Guidance While Watching Reality TV

I want to share a moment of Knowing that hit me in a very profound way. And I wasn’t meditating, or in nature, or at a sacred site.

I was watching Reality TV.

I want to share this not only to normalize how and when divine inspiration may arise, but also because it happened while doing something I still low key feel shame about at times.

My relationship with Reality TV is similar to other vices I’ve navigated in my life. And since this isn’t my first rodeo, watching isn’t always passive for me. I’m simultaneously exploring my motivations for watching, how it’s making me feel, and any judgments that arise.

And I suspect that’s exactly why it happened for me in this way. To help release the judgment — and thus the shame — and ultimately the pattern.

The Extraordinary In The Ordinary

Many people expect moments of divine guidance to arise in “spiritual” settings . And they do!!

Aaand they can happen in everyday moments, from going to the bathroom to watching Reality TV.

While I historically have had many aha moments in the bathroom, I didn’t truly recognize the magic in the ordinary.

But that shifted after I started automatic writing. All thanks to one of the very first messages I received. Simple and yet profound.

“Allow and receive.”

Personally, this paved the path for deepening my ability to also surrender and trust. And my experience of life has been forever changed by this process. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ve probably seen this theme emerge in my writing.

So let’s see how “allowing and receiving” manifested in this moment.

Reality TV As Divine Inspiration

I was watching season four of Below Deck: Down Under because I had seen the crossover on RHSLC and was curious. To be honest, I had never clicked with this series. I’m more of a housewife and drag race girl.

Captain Jason from Below deck looking at his goldfish tank

There was a quick scene where Captain Jason was naming the goldfish based on the new crew.

At first, I felt this sense of aww that’s sweet… which immediately shifted into gosh that’s quite sad.

Why? Well because I’m someone who cried at the Staten Island Zoo… at 18.

But in that particular moment? It was because I saw these goldfish believing the tank they are swimming in is the ocean. Yet little do they know… they are literally floating on the actual ocean.

And then it hit me:

That is what so many of us experience.

Those limiting beliefs about who and what we are? They are our fish tank.

If we expand beyond what we’ve known, we eventually realize that we are in the ocean.

As Rumi says: we are the entire ocean in a drop.

The Goldfish Effect

Remember, this is all a metaphor. Goldfish would literally die in the ocean. To be fair, I don’t even know if they are actual goldfish. But thinking they were led to this next discovery.

Because as I am writing this section, I am reminded of the show Ted Lasso. He tells Sam to be the goldfish because they have memory span of about 5 seconds.

And just like that, the message began to deepen.

We really are like the goldfish. In a perpetual state of forgetting.

Even if we have a moment of clarity — poof, it’s gone.

Here’s the beauty in this.

Everything can be seen as a mirror. A reflection. A co-creation of one’s belief systems (conscious and unconscious), perceptions, and perspectives.

You are only the goldfish as long as you stay identified with the tank.

‘Tis the magic of free will.

The Infinite Bloom

It probably won’t click overnight. And in the words of Ted, heck yeah if it does!

But it is like pulling a thread on a sweater.

As you sit with this, you might begin to see how deeply limiting and unconscious beliefs are actually running the show. You might even begin to question if you’ve ever truly exercised free will.

It can be deeply uncomfortable at first — kind of like Neo exiting the Matrix.

And eventually you awaken to Truth. And this can bring a sense of ease and enjoyment… even in the challenging times.

And what I find so freeing about this? There is no end game. No ultimate outcome.

You are a flower with infinite petals, always blooming.

Friends, as you bloom — always remember to stay curious.
