Power of Presence: Finding Wisdom in Distraction Mode

If you’ve ever tried to break a habit or pattern, you know how hard it can be! Because often these patterns become unconscious and automatic. Personally, I always thought this process took time. However, I was recently shown just how quickly it can happen.

Power of Patterns

I was putting together a dresser for the first time.

I was only on step 2, putting tracks on one of the sides. Thankfully, I “happened” to glance down at the instructions.

Yet another moment, reminding me that I’m always being protected.

I noticed a close up on the instructions of which holes to use. And I quickly realized I was doing it incorrectly.

I took them off and put them back on correctly.

I went to put on the third track and guess what happened?

I reverted right back to doing it the way I started. The incorrect way.

I sat there in amazement in how quickly I had adopted a misguided pattern.

And this is when I dropped into compassionate curiosity.

I just put on two tracks the correct way, so why did I revert back to the old pattern?

Power of Presence

I realized I let my mind wander off as I put it on.

I wasn’t present.

In that moment of distraction, I reverted back to an old pattern. One that I had adopted less than 10 minutes prior.

And it was presence that helped me see it clearly.

I saw the power of presence and the power of not being present.

Finding Wisdom in Distractions

Friends, where in your life can you embody presence with compassionate curiosity to support you in your evolution?

If you’re drawing a blank, I have an unexpected suggestion…if it resonates.

Personally, I’ve been finding it quite informative to drop into presence when I find myself in distraction mode.

It’s already happening, right? Why not use it as an opportunity to drop in.

I’ve been doing this a lot lately with behaviors I judge myself for like watching reality TV and playing Mahjong on my phone.

I have an entire piece about reality tv brewing in my mind. So for today let’s explore some realizations I’ve had with Mahjong.

Here are some tidbits I’ve learned….

  • I hold tension in my jaw when I’m striving
  • My ego and sense of competition feed into the physical tension and reduce my enjoyment
  • Being present while playing is so much more satisfying
  • My old addictive tendencies can come back quite easily
  • I mess up when when I go too quickly
  • When my ego “thinks” it’s outsmarted the game and goes into autopilot, I always lose
  • I start to feel very off physically, mentally and emotionally when I play without awareness, especially for too long
  • I appreciate the mirror when I ask for a clue and the answer revealed seems so obvious, yet i couldn’t see it

So if judging your distractions is not supporting you, start to befriend them. There can be so much wisdom in distraction mode if we are compassionate enough to listen.

Until next time friends, stay curious!
