What Anger Taught Me About Compassion

Pepper, my frenchie life companion, taught me a valuable lesson yesterday about anger and compassion. He’s spent his whole life teaching me, though only now am I slowly seeing the depths of his guidance.

Stepping Into Anger

Most of our relational conflict looks like any human relationship, differing wants. I often want to or need to get back home and he wants to stay put where he is.

Yesterday, I could feel the hanger growing and knew I should direct him back home before it got too intense.  But he felt determined to go deeper into the woods and I wanted to honor that, as it’s not often he wants to go on a long walk these days. I finally put my foot down when I needed to get back and he would not budge. There was no way I could carry him with my back, so we were at a standstill.

I saw myself getting angry like I have in the past and realized something. I can choose to get swept up in the anger. Though from past experiences, I always feel badly after. So I chose to acknowledge it and ground myself. Once grounded, I tuned in for any messages about the situation and I heard, “it doesn’t have to mean anything”. I gratefully giggled.

And just like I’ve shared in previous posts, he started to walk after I took in the message. Now, he didn’t walk very far, but I take what I can get at those times.

Eventually, he miraculously walked himself out of the woods and I ran home to get his stroller.

We ate lunch and I went back to finish mowing the lawn. I had been mowing earlier, when he started to venture off to the trailhead. As I resumed, the sun was beating down on me and I was still feeling some feels about it all.

Holding Anger and Compassion

And this is where my big AHA moment came.

It was hard to feel compassion while angry.

I usually watch out for any insects while mowing so I don’t unknowingly take a life. But I felt this sense of disregard. This stood out so clearly for me because it was a 180 from earlier.

In the woods, I felt a deep sense of interconnectedness. For example, I started tearing up looking at dew. It’s not the first time this has happened, but in this particular moment, I felt this deep sense of connection that I couldn’t attach any words to. I could only feel it.

I sat with this very familiar experience of moving from deep connection to disconnection. When I say “sat with”, I mean that while I mowed,  I created space energetically to be in observation of it.

And this is going to feel like a massive out of left field pivot, so please be open.

I felt so much trust in what the world is experiencing right now.

Let me explain.

I couldn’t feel compassion in the same way when I was angry. And I think that’s a very common experience for so many.

I also think it contributes to much of the energy behind the atrocities we are seeing every day.

And through it all. Because of it all…

People are angry AND compassionate. The anger is uniting us. People are without hesitation supporting their fellow neighbors.

And didn’t a pretty important figure say, love thy neighbor as yourself?

Christ Consciousness

“Christ Consciousness” is a term that many people find polarizing. I had a lot of resistance to it myself at first. That softened as I realized it’s simply the innate consciousness that Jesus and Buddha and many others embodied. It goes by many other names such as: unity consciousness and Buddha nature, but I will use this one given the context of neighbors supporting one another.

In this moment of recognition, I held the extremes and saw the collective embodiment of Christ Consciousness. And what I love is that people are naturally coming together. They aren’t striving or seeking this state of being.

It mirrors back that this sense of love and unity is innately within us.

I believe that we create our own reality. And this moment deepened the sense of trust that I have held through this all.  That this is part of a greater collective shift in humanity. A shift and expansion of consciousness that will lift us out of separation and division and into love and unity.

This embodied experience of seeing my inability to be compassionate while angry, helped me to see the wonder of so many people being compassionate through the anger.

And for that Pepper, I greatly thank you for refusing to walk in the woods.

Until next time friends, stay curious.
