How to Stop Judging Yourself and Others

I wanted to share a funny experience I had after shaving my legs. Because it resulted in a teaching that I hope will help you to stop judging yourself and others.

My Epic Fail

Prior to this experience, I had shaven my legs and I did not get the job done.

So this time, I was very intentional in trying to do a “good” job. Though, I can’t see without my glasses or contacts, so I was just hoping for the best without any real time feedback.

Thankfully, I forgot to check when I got out. Because I’m not sure if this experience would have occurred.

Because shortly after, I was out on a walk with Pepper. And if you know Pepper, you know that our walks are 80% sitting or laying down.

He was sitting in this spot that seems energetically supercharged because I always tend to receive messages while I’m there.

I knelt down to pet him and saw my legs and realized I did not get the job again, yet again!

I laughed pretty hard and thought, “of course you didn’t”.

It’s Not You, It’s the Tool

So while I wasn’t judging myself in a harsh manner, I was in an energy of self-deprecating judgement.

And then came the teaching.

I heard, “it’s not you, it’s the tool”.

Any judgment melted away in that moment!

Of course I couldn’t get the job done. I hadn’t changed the razor head in a very long time.

I saw this as a reflection point moment.

How often do we judge ourselves for not being able to do something. Or judge another when perhaps they don’t have the tools to accomplish it.

Imagine building a home with a hammer and screwdriver.

You can maybe get it done, but having power tools will make it so much easier.

However, if the home were a dollhouse, you might not want to use the power tools.

So you see, it’s not just the tool, but when and how to use it.

Working in the eating disorder world, it also meant noticing when a skill or tool was no longer working in the same way. So many clients would judge themselves until they acknowledged they needed something different at this point in their journey.

Friends, the next time you go to judge yourself or another for not “accomplishing” the goal. Ask yourself if you or they had the proper tools in the first place.

And until next time friends, stay curious!
